EPAct 2005 Tax Deductions – Time Is Running Out

Posted in Other - Business & Finance on 30.12.09

Many businesses have implemented energy efficiency measures in their facilities over the past several years to help decrease operating expenses and aid the local and global environment. What a lot of these companies do not know is that sizeable federal tax deductions are available to them and also that time may be running out.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct 2005) provides generous, immediate tax deductions to businesses for making energy efficiency improvements to their buildings. The federal tax incentives center mainly on efficiency improvements to lighting, HVAC and building envelopes and can be as large as $1.80 per square foot.

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 extended Section 179D and EPAct 2005 so the act will not expire until December 31, 2013. However, that does not mean that time may not be running out for some companies.

For businesses that implemented energy efficiency projects in 2006 it is probable they filed their tax returns before April 15, 2007. If they were unaware of the deductions at that time, they are now at risk of losing those tax deductions forever since the IRS only allows a three year period to amend tax returns.

That means if you have not yet amended your 2006 tax return you have only a few months left to do so!

As an electrical contractor working with commercial and industrial customers you certainly have been thinking about ways to increase your sales and likely how to better utilize your current book of business to that end. You have also most likely been approached by your current customers asking what they can do to reduce their energy costs.

Have you thought about a strategic partnership with an experienced engineering firm that specializes solely in turnkey, energy cost reduction projects on a national level? One that can bring whole facility energy solutions to the table for you and your customers? A company that can provide a fast payback and increase cash flow for your customer?

Bringing in such a company will grow your business as you will be the one who is sub-contracted by the engineering firm to provide the installation services under their management and direction. You can use this approach over and over again with all of your customers and doing so will not only increase your revenues exponentially, it will also transform your customers’ impression of you from simply another vendor to that of a valued consultant.

Getting Your Real Online Business Listed in the Search Engines

Posted in Other - Business & Finance on 04.06.09

One of the most important steps to getting a real online business up and running is web site traffic. An excellent source of website traffic is search engine traffic. Many people who start a home-based business hesitate to use search engine traffic because they do not think they can compete with the larger websites. They believe it is impossible to outrank them.

Here is what you may not realize. You can beat many websites in search engine rankings because there are a number of keywords and phrases these websites are not even trying to get ranked for. We offer a book for sale called “Thomas Jefferson Education.” There is only one other website on the first page for this keyword that sells this book as well. As a result, at the time of this writing, we are listed on the first page of Google for this keyword and phrase.

Do you understand the benefit of this? By focusing my efforts on the keyword and phrase for my book, we get a good search engine placement. At some times in the past, we have even outranked the publisher webpage of the book that we sell. Although Amazon also ranks well for this keyword, they only sell used copies.

My students ask me all the time “How does Google determine where I get ranked?” Nobody knows for sure because if they did, they can manipulate the listings and it will hurt Google?s business.

If you see someone selling an eBook that claims to teach you “everything you need to know to get listed in the search engines” you should proceed very cautiously. The reason why no one can teach you everything is because no one knows everything. Google itself changes the formula all the time.

I am not saying that people are lying when they tell you this. There are certain fundamentals that will typically always hold true. However, no one knows the specific components that you need to know in order to manipulate the rankings.

So what is the key to getting high listings in the search engines? The key is to increase the amount of backward links you have to your website. A backward link is when another website links to your website. Google uses that to determine if your site is important.

Most search engines use back links as part of their search engine algorithm. For example, if you get a link on a website and the link says, “Butterfly”, this will help your search engine rankings if your website is also about butterflies. This is how search engines determine what website should get placed where.

There are many ways to get back links. Here are some suggestions:

1. Ask and link back: One way is to ask others to link to you in exchange for you linking to them.

2. Write a press release: You can write a press release and submit it online about your company. You need to include a link to your website to get any benefit. If a news website uses your release, they will publish it along with a link back to your web site. An example of a press release site is http://www.free-press-release.com/

3. Write an article: You can write an article about the topic that your web site is about with a link back to your website. You then want to submit it to the different article directories that are available online. Many ezine publishers and blog owners use content in these directories so you can get free links that way. You not only get the link from the directory, but you get the link from each site that uses your articles as well. One of the best directories is http://ezinearticles.com/

Out of all of these strategies, I personally prefer article submissions. They give you the biggest “bang for your buck” because one article can continue to create back links to your website for months or even years to come. What this does is gives you a residual source of traffic so that you can promote your real online business effectively.

The Disadvantages of Being a Consultant

Posted in Other - Business & Finance on 04.06.09

An independent consultant is on their own with no support structure. The list of disadvantages of being an independent consultant can seem daunting if you are one of the ordinary rank and file folk who has to earn enough money to fund the work of the business (phone bills, stationery, postage, motor car bills) and support some kind of a family.

There is a seemingly endless challenge of being expected to discover new concepts, or new initiatives for achieving this or that breakthrough in promotion or business presentation or operating economies. The independent consultant will often be expected to know everything in their area of speialism, or at least know where they can leran what they don’t know. The Internet and the likes of Google can be a savour these days, but you must always beware of the chance that at least two of the bosses have teengagers who have already found for their father at least twowebsites that you might have missed, and they will be waiting to confront you upon your next visit to their office.

But the biggie is the work-load. It is very likely immense and intense. You and your consultancy survive in the long term only by taking on five, six, seven, eight or nine clients at a time, on the basis that if you lose one client (maybe he goes out of business altogether) you still ought to have enough fee income to avoid “bleeding to death” (to use the vernacular of the trade).

However the independent consultant cannot tell any of their clients that they will have to be only priority two or three for your attention. They will all expect to be your most important client – priority one.

Working late and sometimes on weekends can sometimes become a regular thing, but the worst nightmare is when a client calls you on Tuesday to tell you that she and all her senior staff will be going away for the whole of Thursday for an project review and that they hope you will be able to join them. And you had been planning to do various other things such as meet a priority one client about a new project!

It is even likely that none of them are even aware of the others for whom you are working and, generally speaking, it is best kept that way.

That is maybe alright if you have chosen to base yourself in some great regional capital, where there are many businesses and probably many consultancy’s serving them. But focus on a county-town environment for some notional ‘quality of life’ benefits and you can be very quickly in trouble when Client A asks you to come to a meeting to discuss how to combat the sparkling new initiatives that have been launched by rival Company B innocently unaware that Company B is also your Client B and his “sparkling new initiatives” are all part of a nice business plan you had compiled and now you are under orders to find a way to destroy it.

It is all good and well, and even inspirational to read about the likes of Max Clifford and his ability to manage one a high-profile celebrity who pays him a healthy fee that will enable him to buy his next yacht. But for the avaerge independent consultant it can sometimes seem that there are more disadvantages to being an independent consultant than there are advantages.
