Attraction Marketing Is Not Fair – Here’s Why…

Posted in Other - Business & Finance on 04.06.09

Attraction marketing techniques can be very frustrating for old school or traditional network marketers. They work hard to generate interest in their mlm opportunity offline and attraction marketers then pick off those leads online. Let’s see how they are doing it…

In The Attraction Marketer’s Manifesto report by Ann Sieg, she describes how network marketer’s are using attraction marketing to leverage of the hard work that network marketers are doing offline. These attraction marketers are literally cleaning up 100’s and 1000’s of leads that where warmed up by offline mlmer’s.

I’ll get into the nitty gritty tactics used in attraction marketing but first it may be helpful to explore what it actually is as it’s a buzz word that pops up in network marketing circles a lot these days.

The Definition Of Attraction Marketing As Used In MLM

The term attraction marketing is fairly self explanatory. These are people that are using marketing tactics (typically on the Internet) to attract prospects to them instead of having to approach people about their business opportunity.

Most mlm companies will teach new distributors to make a list and then approach those people one by one. This is the exact opposite of what attraction marketers do and in fact, most of them got into this way of working because they were uncomfortable building their mlm business this way.

Attraction marketer’s usually lead with a free offer such as an ebook, an audio or a video series. They will then offer a cheap training course related to how to build a network marketing business. If the information is good, the prospect then views the marketer as a credible source of information about building a network marketing business.

This is sometimes referred to as a funded proposal, meaning that the commission on selling the training material will typically cover any advertising costs that they incur. This means that they are able to propose their business opportunity and at the same time get funded to do it. You may also hear this “front-end” sale being referred to as a self liquidating offer, basically it means the same thing as a funded proposal.

So the principle of attraction marketing is to offer useful (and searched for) information to attract these prospects into their sales funnel and eventually into their network marketing organization. Fundamentally this is quite an excellent thing to do but it puts those network marketers who are not using the Internet to market their business at a severe disadvantage.

How people using attraction marketing are pinching truck loads of leads off traditional network marketers in broad daylight…

Here’s the problem for traditional network marketers — A recent Jupiter research report found that more than 25% of people they studied have cut back on watching TV…so they can spend more time on the Internet!

The Internet has become the research method for more than 70% of Americans. When they have a buying decision to make the Internet is the fist port of call.

This is a fact that attraction marketers in the network marketing industry are taking advantage of and with devastating results. In the good old days when you showed someone a business opportunity, basically the only information they had was what you gave them; a brochure, a CD, or perhaps a one on one presentation.

Google is the first place people go when they get told about a business opportunity these days. What is happening is the traditional MLMer’s are getting people interested enough to do some research but what happens after that is out of their hands.

To illustrate, consider if someone was told about the Agel MLM business opportunity. They would go to Google and start running some basic searches. They may type in terms such as; ‘Agel business opportunity’, ‘Agel success stories’, ‘is Agel a scam’ and so on. Smart marketers know exactly what people are searching for and deliver the perfect message to match. They may write an article with the title, How to build an Agel business in less than 1 year.

All of a sudden your prospect is reading that message and they will naturally be curious…

… when they read that message chances are they will want to know more and so they will go on that marketers mailing list to get more information.

Typically over the next few weeks the prospects will get email messages about how to build an mlm business without chasing friends and family. They may decide to buy an information product about this from that marketer. At this stage, it will be hard for the offline network marketer to get that prospect back even though they got them interested in the beginning.

The marketer that sold them the information product will usually follow up with a telephone call and before they know it, they are thinking;

“I love the idea of building my home business without having to chase friends & family. I’ve got to work with this person so that they can show me how to do it!”

There are even some attraction marketers that use controversial messages to hook a prospect into their sales funnel and as there is no rules against this, as they say..that’s life. If you visit a mlm forum you won’t have any trouble finding a thread were people are complaining about how bad these attraction marketing methods are, talking about the fact that they are “pinching THEIR prospects”.

While traditional MLMer’s complain in the forums, attraction marketers will continue to clean up huge numbers of qualified MLM leads. If you are not using attraction marketing to generate business for your MLM business, things will get tougher and tougher in the years to come.

So What’s The Solution?

Well, as they say, if you can’t beat them…join them.

People are flocking to the Internet in search of alternative ways to make an income. As the global economy worsens and corporate America become increasingly unstable, more and more people will come online looking for income opportunities. Those people that learn the skills of Internet marketing now will be in a prime position to capitalize on this influx of aspiring home business owners.
