Steps To Install Flashing In Your Roof

Posted in Other - Business & Finance on 16.12.09

All the households are left wandering about the possible ways of preventing water leaks and molds. Installing a roof flashing is one way of handling the situation. Roof flashing is a sheet of water-proof material that protects your roof from seepages and leakages. It takes care of the leak-prone areas of the roofs such as valleys, voids etc.

Since valleys and the voids of the roof are the places susceptible to water accumulation and seepage, they’re equipped with the essential layer of flashing. Hence, it becomes quintessential to make way for such roof flashing when it comes to ensuring a leak-proof setting to your roof.

Start off the project by noting down the dimensions of the roof spread where the flashing would be installed. Walk down to a local hardware store and purchase the required flashing material. With the help of a utility knife or tin snips, cut out the appropriate length of flashing from the material.

Place the segment of flashing on the valley of the roof such that the centre of the sheet lies on the middle of the valley. Install the flashing in such a way that it covers the edges as well as the middle of the void. The line that joins the two sides of the roof is also covered by the flashing.

Once you’ve laid the flashing flat on the roof, staple it to the underlying setup such that a margin of about 2 inches is left on each side of the flashing. Don’t nail the setup as that could hurt the material of the flashing to large extent. The setup would render a water-proof setting to your roof. An additional fascia board layer can be accommodated in the scheme of things to cover those voids that were left unattended during the flashing.

After the initial phase of the project is over, move to the next phase of enveloping the flashing setup. Pour liberal amount of tar on the concerned spread and scatter it well. Let the tar solidify and then move ahead with the proceedings.

Now, bring the shingles in along with the associated nails. Take a hand-held hammer and nail down the shingles one by one. The shingles form the layer next to the tar such that the tar lies underneath the shingles. A pry bar tool can be used to detach the shingles that are installed inaccurately.

Test whether the assignment is accomplished or not. Observe water leaks or molds on the interior walls or ceilings after a heavy rainfall. No such problem seals the success of the assignment.

How Does A Ridge Vent Render Proper Ventilation To Your Home ?

Posted in Other - Business & Finance on 11.12.09

Some components of the roof don’t get as much attention as they deserve. One of them is the ridge vent. The households often don’t give enough preference to the installation of such vents. The vents are obligatory enough to find a place in the scheme of things as they maintain the air flow of your home.

Those households that are not equipped with the essential ridge vent need not to worry. The vents can be installed even on an existing roof. Though, it is always in the favor of the schema of the home to install a vent during the development of the house only.

Before you shoot off the campaign, apprehend the intensity of the assignment on hand. A supervision of an expert may prove handy in deciding the same. Also, a right set of tools must be at your disposal throughout the life of the project. The tools primarily include a circular saw, a wood chisel and a pry bar. Along with these tools, the roofing supplies such as shingles, vents, nails etc. need to be purchased as well.

Initialize the proceedings by tearing off the already set ridge cap. Try to save as many shingles as possible during the whole operation as they may be required in the later phase of the project. You can avail the services of a pry bar tool to accomplish this particular part of the assignment.

The outcome of the pulling operation would be an area of bare sheathing. Determine the zone of the ridge vent by marking a line to the edge of the roof. However, leave some margin at the edge of the roof. Make sure that the markings are bright enough to be noticed.

Start cutting the area from the predefined line. Handle the long cutting with the help of a circular saw and cross-cut using a wood chisel. Slip the business-end of the pry bar tool under the edges of the sheathing and pull it up. Once the sheathing is removed, move to the next step.

Place the newly purchased ridge vent on the concerned area and attach it to the rafters. Use long galvanized nails only to bind the setup.

Build up the ridge cap on the vent by replacing the old ridge cap.

Different Ways Of Hiding Your Electrical Cords and Wires

Posted in Other - Business & Finance on 07.12.09

The electrical cords and cables that remain suspended from one electrical junction to an outlet, appear quite odd. Such setting spoils the serenity of the house and reduces the calmness of the interiors.

Hence, proper ways should be brought in to hide or cover such electrical cables and cords. The solution to this problem may even end up enhancing the appeal of your interior design.

Notify yourself about the location and length of the cable that needs to be covered. If the wire runs along the wall behind any furniture then place another furniture or vase to hide it completely. For instance, if the furniture happens to be a table then place a vase or book-shelf under the table. If however the length of the cable is longer than the vase or shelf length then move onto other alternatives.

Walk down to a local hardware store and demand cable covers. The cable covers are the components that sheath the wiring setup along its entire length. They’re generally not preferred in the first place as they make the wall architecture look odd. Although, they may be painted to restore the theme of the room but somehow, they fail to dwell with the setup.

Moreover, such cable covers are prone to easy wear and tear and hence, call for regular maintenance and repairs. Alternatively, you can eliminate the prospects of such additional components by altering your electrical setup. Check whether the concerned electrical outlet can be shifted or not. If it can be transferred to a preferred location on the wall then go for it.

To avoid the complexity of replacing or installing an electric outlet, switch to a hollow base board. The suspended wires and cables are covered behind the baseboard setting. The baseboard is painted so as to complement the wall color. This is a broader prospect of the wire covers and provides a wide setup to hide the cables and cords. Alternatively, the baseboard can be enveloped with a silk sheathing to match the interior design.

If nothing seems to convince you then make way for an isolated battery apparatus to backup the concerned outlet. This may call for some financial commitment but resolves the issue on permanent basis. The battery would not call for regular replacements and paint jobs as in case of baseboards or covers.

Some recommendations can be sought from a salesperson regarding the same as well.

Insulating Your Electrical Outlets

Posted in Other - Business & Finance on 06.12.09

Some households keep wondering about the inefficiency of their heating or cooling devices. For instance, the air-conditioners or the cooling fans don’t end up cooling the home spaces as much as they’re expected to. Similarly, the heaters fail to deliver the desired results during the winters.

A defectively insulated electrical setup may be the reason behind such irregularity. Hence, all the outlets and receptacles of the home need to be properly insulated. The task doesn’t call for the involvement of a professional. Even a novice with a wise head on his shoulders can accomplish the assignment.

To maintain a particular temperature in the room, it becomes quintessential to insulate the air such that no loss of air or minimal loss of air occurs. This can be achieved by insulating the electrical outlets properly.

Kick off the assignment by making insulation pads of foam. Buy a large piece of foam and cut out rectangular segments from it. The size of each segment must be similar to the size of the respective electrical outlet. Craft a hole at the center of each segment so as to match the internal design of the outlet. If you don’t want to get involved in tedious job of preparing pads then go for the readymade ones.

Once you’ve the foam pads at your disposal, cut off electricity supply to all the spaces of the home. To switch off electricity, locate the main fuse or the electrical breaker box.

Grab a standard screwdriver and unscrew the face plate of the concerned electrical outlet. Place the plate aside and start unscrewing the wires from the terminals. Meanwhile, observe the physical state of the outlet and locate any cracks or leaks. Get them fixed immediately such that a faultless condition is rendered to the concerned receptacle. Insert the pads into the outlet such that all the wires pass through the central hole of the pad. Restore the normal operation of the outlet by screwing back the setup.

Repeat the same process with the other outlets and receptacles. Make sure that all the broken or faulty switches or plugs are replaced with new ones.

Test the success of the job by switching on power supply from the mains.
